Fairbairn House Review, June 2016

by Deirdre Bateman, Director, Boutique Lodgings of New Zealand

A huge amount of time and careful thought has gone into the design of this superb new home high on the hill above Acacia Bay.

The site was chosen for its uninterrupted views over the lake to Taupo township (the lights literally twinkling at night) to the east, a broad aspect of hills and the lake to the west, and the mountains to the south. Situated at the ‘end of the road’ in the Grandview Country Estate, with farmland beyond, privacy is guaranteed.

The guest apartment suite, with its easterly outlook and own external access, is wonderfully relaxing and comfortable. Hosts Andrew and Jane have travelled extensively and have created the sort of environment they enjoy to stay in, offering privacy and independence. Every detail has been thought out including a well-appointed kitchenette, a generous breakfast ‘hamper’ replenished every day, beverages in the refrigerator, and a selection of DVDs, CDs, board games, books and magazines. Mountain bikes, a kayak and paddle board are available for guests to use, as the lake area offers many lovely walks and mountain biking tracks close by should the idea of energetic pursuits appeal. Fairbairn House is next to the Grandview recreational reserve with tennis court, pitch and putt golf, and a golf driving net.

The delightful L’Arte Café and Sculpture Gallery is within walking distance, and Taupo has an abundance of dining options. Should you desire Andrew and Jane offer a barbeque pack complete with delicious salads to enjoy on the patio, while savouring the extensive view.

There is also the option of renting the whole house, on application.
